Scalp Psoriasis is a common condition and although there is no cure for it, in most cases it is often very treatable or at least controllable and generally some improvement to the discomfort it may cause can be achieved. It can affect men, women and even children.
It is completely non-infectious and non-contagious, i.e. you cannot catch it from someone else or spread it on your own body.
It is caused simply by the usual skin replacement process being put into high speed. Normally skin cells are replaced every 21-28 days, however, in psoriasis they are replaced every 2-6 days, which produces the build up effect of skin cells on the skin surface known as 'psoriatic plaques'.
It is unclear as to what really causes psoriasis, however, it is often described as an 'auto-immune disease', with unkown origin.

Causative factors can be put down to anything from genetics, dietary, illness, medication, stress, trauma, to hormonal.
Psoriasis presents itself as raised red patches of skin, covered with silvery white scales. These scales are the build up of dead skin cells waiting to shed and the redness is caused by the increase in blood vessels needed to feed the increase in cell production.
Psoriasis can range from mild to severe, from a single patch to several over the entire scalp or even affecting the body. Most common areas affected are usually the scalp, elbows or backs of knees.
In most cases, psoriasis can be treated and kept under control with specialized shampoos, and in more severe chronic cases treatment creams/lotions may be required to help reduce any irritation and redness.
What can we do for you?
It can be quite a stubborn condition, that takes time and committment in treating to achieve positive results. However, at the same time, psoriasis has been known to just disappear or appear for no reason whatsoever.
It is not a condition to be taken lightly as great discomfort may be experienced with constant itching and pain, which in turn may affect your daily life or even sleep. Constant scratching at your scalp can be quite embarrassing apart from quite uncomfortable if the scalp gets sore and inflammed. The shedding of any scales often mistaken for dandruff can be quite embarrassing.
Sufferers of psoriasis often feel quite self-conscious in their appearance, it just doesn't make you feel good about yourself and in turn can affect your self-esteem and confidence and therefore have quite a negative affect on your quality of life.
You are not alone and that is the most important thing to remember, this is a more common condition than you may think.
However, we understand your concerns and would like to reassure you that in most cases of psoriaisis that we have treated, we have had wonderful results!
Emphasis is on treat it as soon as possible and regularly, 'better late than never'.
